Music

The main objectives of the Music Department are to provide as many opportunities for students to learn about many different types of music from diverse times and places, with particular reference to both Chinese and Western traditions. Through the school’s Extension Programmes, the Saturday Morning Music Programme and our lunchtime activities, we also offer the chance to learn a wide range of instruments, along with the opportunity to participate in a variety of vocal and instrumental ensembles.

Our curriculum is based on the most effective elements of the English National Curriculum and the International Primary Curriculum (IPC) focusing on musical concepts. Music lessons are intensely practical, creative and fun. Students are exposed to different styles and ideas through listening and they explore these ideas through improvising, composing and performing. Singing comprises an important part of the curriculum and all students focus on improving their sense of rhythm and pitch.

As students move on to Secondary Division, they will eventually have the option of sitting the IGCSE exam in Music which in turn leads to the International Baccalaureate (IB) Music Diploma. At Primary Division, our goal is to ensure that students develop the necessary skills and knowledge that will enable them to be successful in these courses.

In addition, we organise a wide range of activities throughout the year to give students further opportunities to showcase their creativity. These include public student performances, workshops with guest artists, and concerts. Members of our choral groups have been invited to sing at major public events.
