The curriculum for Years 6-9 takes the Shanghai curriculum as its base, but incorporates resources and approaches from major international curriculums and is designed to allow students to progress on to the IB Diploma.
Learning Approach
Whether conducting experiments in chemistry, acting out a scene from Shakespeare in drama or working with classmates on a maths project, we ensure that students have stimulating and varied classroom activities. As with the Primary School, we keep a good balance between teaching students skills and knowledge, as we believe this is the best way to prepare them for the challenges of the senior secondary school curriculum and university study.
Language of Instruction
The curriculum is taught using a dual-language approach; students are immersed in Chinese and English across subject areas and throughout the school day. This ensures that students become proficient and articulate in both languages. Compared to the Primary School, a greater proportion of the time is spent using English as the language of instruction. The Junior Secondary School curriculum places high demands on students' use of academic language and we offer extra language support to all students in this area.
Assessment
We regularly assess students' work in all subjects through unit tests, mid-semester tests and end-of-semester tests as well as standardised international tests. Additionally, students work towards the Shanghai Middle School Graduation Exam.
