YK Pao School's mission is to provide each child with an education that allows them to develop as a “whole person”.
YK Pao School focuses on the development of all aspects of a child's life. Not only do we pursue academic excellence, but we promote children's balanced personal, psychological and physical development, and
the formation of a strong set of values and morals.
We firmly believe that whole person education is vital to enable children to face up to academic and personal challenges, to tackle setbacks and obstacles with a positive attitude, to make informed and sensible choices, and to maintain a sense of social responsibility.
The entrance criteria of Harvard, Yale, Oxford, and other top class universities around the world all place particular emphasis on selecting well-rounded, balanced individuals with a wide range of skills.
Primary School
Delight education
Ni Guyin, the Founding Principal and Honorary Principal of YK Pao School is the creator of “delight education” in China, a programme which brings together Chinese and Western teaching philosophies and methods, and emphasizes the importance of “being happy in one’s development, and developing happiness”. “Delight education” allows students to be happy whilst learning, and to find joy in seeking out knowledge, putting particular importance on respect for each student as an individual.
House system
One of YK Pao School's unique characteristics is the house system, which contributes to the development of students' "soft skills", such as self-reliance, a sense of responsibility, and leadership qualities. In the house system, students are separated into four house groups that cross the boundaries between different years in the school, each named after a season- Spring (Green), Summer (Yellow), Autumn (Red), and Winter (Blue). The house groups encourage students to form close relationships with each other, and students can earn honour for their houses by accruing house points through hard work and good behaviour in school, as well as achievement in sporting events.
Community activities
We encourage students to establish a sense of responsibility towards their community through a series of community activities. YK Pao School has organised aid for the Cifeng School in an area of Sichuan affected by the Wenchuan earthquake. As well as donating books and teaching materials we have organised exchange activities with Cifeng staff and students. Helping others allows the students to develop a sense of social responsibility and charitable spirit. Activities are also held for teachers' day, which promotes the traditional Chinese ideal of a strong relationship between teacher and student, and nurtures the students’ sense of gratitude from an early age.
Secondary School
Boarding
Our Secondary School is a boarding school because we believe that boarding offers a true whole-person education and is important in the development of young people. A good boarding system can ensure a coherent educational programme, offering students extensive academic support and helping develop their independence and sense of responsibility through teaching students how to organise their lives and minimising distractions. Additionally, it helps students develop good social skills, which will help them through their lives. YK Pao School's boarding programme is based on the model used by leading European and US boarding schools.
Well-balanced development
The boarding programme helps students balance both academic progress and their development as people by giving students more time and opportunities to spend on hobbies and interests, such as music, art, writing and sport.
