Engaging in the Spirit of Giving

YK Pao School’s Primary Division recently participated in the Giving Tree project, a charity organization headed by Community Center Shanghai that has been delivering winter clothing and school supplies to underprivileged students and teachers since 2003. This year, our Primary Division’s over 220 students and many staff worked together to fill over 300 bags stuffed with clothing and gifts for Chen’s Dam Migrant School in Jiaxing.

On December 2nd, 2014, a group of our teachers, parents, and student donor representatives from each year level arrived in Jiaxing, where the Giving Tree ceremony promptly began. After the Giving Tree charity staff and school Principal gave their warm welcoming speeches, students of Chen’s Dam performed a riveting dance to show their appreciation, while Pao School’s Year 5 students sang a rendition of Bruno Mars’ “Come to Me” as a token of friendship. Everyone then joined together for the Giving Tree Song. Our Pao School donors then personally distributed their gift bags to students and teachers.

This truly inspiring cause was not only an opportunity to venture beyond the flourishing districts of Shanghai and learn about more remote communities that are less fortunate than their own  - in seeing all of the happy faces in the recipients, our students learned about the spirit of giving and the importance of showing generosity to those in need.

Here are some reflections from our Year 5 students!

I learned that whenever we feel in need of something, others need it more.

                                                                    —— Sam

Not everyone is as lucky as we are, and we shouldn’t take everything for granted.

                                                                     ——Oscar

I learned about the power of compassion and love.                             ——Benjamin

Charity can make the world a better place.

                                                                     ——Jamin

There are many helpful people in the community. When you’re in need, there will be plenty of people to help you. We also have to help others and that makes us happy.
