Residential Enrichment English Camp off to a great start!

YK Pao School successfully welcomed 84 campers to its very first Residential Enrichment English Camp on June 28! This summer, our campers will not only have fun studying English, but also improve their speaking, composition and performing abilities through various teaching activities.

Last week, classes began with self-introductions – students got to know each other in an all-English environment. They also engaged in creative writing and even began practicing their acting skills in drama class. Our coordinators have designed a script especially for the camp, which students have already began learning and rehearsing in preparation for their highly anticipated performance on July 10.

In science class, our campers learned how to make yogurt and also performed many interesting experiments, while in culture class, they explored the differences between Chinese and other cultures by making different types of tea, posters, perfumes and cakes. In art class, students used a special knife to make stamps for their paintings, while others students carved plaster statues. The challenge of learning the difficult process of engraving and carving was made more challenging due to the language factor, but everyone persisted, and the result: absolutely stunning works of art!

Sports has always been a favorite for our campers, who enjoy having this chance to have fun and relax. Last week, some students took part in swimming and Frisbee throwing. Over the course of the two-week camp, each student will be participating in the same five types of sports activities as Pao School’s Y1-Y5 students.

In the evening, after a self-study period, students take part in a wide variety of activities. Last week, campers watched the movie "The Princess Bride," and also played capture the flag on the field. Activities like these give everyone a chance to participate and build team spirit. This past weekend, students visited the Shanghai Urban Planning Exhibition Centre to explore and better understand the city of Shanghai. The Junior Counselors even specially prepared a treasure hunt for our campers!

This is the first summer camp held at Pao School’s Secondary Division, and for some of our younger campers and first-time boarders, homesickness is unavoidable. Our experienced teaching staff have provided some helpful advice for these students: "While we all go through difficult times in life, what’s important is that we learn to overcome them." Witnessing our students learning to adapt to a new environment and growing as individuals is what gives our camps their true meaning and purpose.

We would like to thank parents for their support of our first ever Residential English Camp. We wish all our campers a relaxing and meaningful summer holiday at Pao School!
