On the morning of July 27, the week-long Ralph Allwood Choral Course officially kicked off with an orientation at the YK Pao School auditorium with former Eton College Director of Music Ralph Allwood, and Martyn Ford, Head of Performing Arts at Lambrook School, and their team of UK choral instructors. Pao School Headmaster Wu Zijian also attended the orientation, delivering a rousing speech to our enthusiastic students.

The Ralph Allwood Choral Course, which will run from July 27 to August 2, marks the first time that Ralph and his team has brought their renowned choral program to China. This is a fantastic opportunity for Pao School to work with some of the UK’s finest musical educators. As Headmaster Wu said in his speech: "There may be boundaries when it comes to language, but not when with music. Rather, music breaks down such barriers, giving us a greater perspective. This choral course will enhance our children’s artistic abilities and realize Pao School’s mission of cultivating first-class talent.” Ralph and his team will be joined by Pao School’s experienced music teachers who will be providing support and guidance for our students during rehearsals and extracurricular activities.

During the orientation, parents were able to catch a glimpse of a day in the life of a choral course student. Students attending the course are sure to be captivated by the infinite charms of music as they explore new genres!

The Ralph Allwood Choral Course, specially designed by Ralph and his team for students ages 8 to 15, includes study of four-part harmony and soprano-range repertoire and culminates in a highly-anticipated concert featuring music from one large work (this year being sections from Fauré’s Requiem) and several light musical works from a range of genres.

As is common practice on the courses in the UK, teachers will give short, daily vocal performances to students after lunch, and a variety of fun activities will be arranged for students during classes and every afternoon, which will enhance students’ interest and enjoyment in their studies.

Ralph Allwood believes musical education should foster enthusiasm in students. Putting aside geographical and cultural differences, enthusiasm is what will set students apart from each other: “This is the first time I am launching my choral course in Shanghai. Students will not only be learning vocal techniques and musical works, but also having fun with games and sports activities that encourage exploration and discovery."
