This week, 14 members of Yale University's a cappella group, The Doox of Yale, visited Pao School's middle school campus to give a performance. In a nearly hour-long show, the group performed eight hit songs in a variety of styles, including 'Around and Around,' 'Love Never Felt So Good,' and 'Sitting on the Dock of the Bay.'

The Doox of Yale, an undergraduate a cappella ensemble founded in 1952, has drawn audiences around the world with their heartfelt performances of timeless songs. Members study fields ranging from economics, international affairs, and computer science, to literature, but they share a common passion for using their voices to tell touching stories. On this visit to China they hope to communicate the colourful life at Yale through music. The group maintains a library of more than 400 arranged pieces that span many musical styles and eras.

One highlight was the return of Bowen Duan, a 2024 Pao School graduate who now studies economics and global affairs at Yale. He had returned to his alma mater to perform with the group. During the visit he reflected on his time at Pao School, saying: "I think what's so special about YK Pao School is not only did it inspire me so much musically. It also taught me a lot about what it meant to pursue my passions and chase my dreams."

Bowen said the years he spent playing the flute in the school orchestra were a formative period in his life. "I've always loved music. I remember when I was with the orchestra, Mrs. Mazzei, our wonderful orchestra instructor, not only taught us to play music and appreciate music, but also really cared about if we were happy performing and if we enjoyed the pieces we were playing. That meant a lot to me. "

Beyond music, Bowen expressed special gratitude to Pao School for giving him the space to explore. "And outside of music it has also provided me with so many amazing opportunities too, both academically and in terms of extracurriculars," he said. "These were opportunities for me to explore, for me to make mistakes, but also figure out what I want to do with my time, my passion, and my energy." He is studying Economics and Global Affairs at Yale. During his Pao School years, he took part in CCAs including student government, debate competitions, and a mock trial. "I've done so many things," he said. "All because YK Pao School supported me unconditionally and gave me the strength, and the courage to chase my dreams."

It was that experience that gave Bowen the courage to push his limits at university. Although he had no prior singing experience when he arrived at Yale, his experiences at Pao School inspired him to audition for the university a cappella group. He wanted to try something new and perform on stage, and he's glad he did. Sharing these musical moments with everyone means a great deal to him.

During an interactive session with members of the a cappella group, Pao School students asked eager questions covering topics such as balancing music and academics, the group's song-selection standards, what it takes to reach a professional performance level, Yale a cappella's Rush selection process, major rehearsal challenges, and the origin and evolution of the Doox name.

Several members of the a cappella group shared their thoughts on the visit to campus. Jacob remarked on his interactions with Pao School students, saying the engaged audience had helped to make it one of their best performances. Yuki praised the warm, enthusiastic community, noting the students' excellent questions and the energetic atmosphere, which had made the performance such fun. Timothy mentioned the excellent facilities and strong musical environment. He was touched by the students' passion for music.

The Doox visit offered Pao School students a glimpse into the academic dedication and artistic passion of these Yale students and, through alumnus Bowen Duan's story, it had shown how Pao School prepares students for the global stage. Bowen himself was also appreciative about this opportunity to connect. "We feel very fortunate to share our love of music with everyone," he said.
