At YK Pao School, we believe that a true learning community is built on trust, respect, and the willingness to listen. When students, teachers, and parents come together as partners, something powerful happens: every voice is heard, and every idea has the potential to make a difference. In this edition of our Educational Corner, Duncan Brown, Director of Student Life of Upper Primary School, shares how we put this belief into practice — from strengthening student agency in the classroom and co-curricular activities to deepening home-school partnerships. Here is his story.

Student Agency: The Foundation of Our Learning Community

For this year at YK Pao School, our commitment to the slogan 'Everyone matters' continues to underpin our campus development priorities and inform decisions that will have a sustained positive impact. Strengthening student agency is a central focus, which means ensuring that students have genuine influence over decisions that affect their learning experience. Educational research consistently shows that when students are treated as partners in their education, engagement deepens and outcomes improve. As Cook-Sather, Bovill, and Felten (2014) argue in Engaging Students as Partners in Learning and Teaching, authentic student partnership transforms educational practice and builds meaningful learning communities.

Quinn and Owen (2016) further demonstrate that student agency and voice are "a driver for engagement," showing that when students exercise choice and influence, their investment in learning grows significantly. This philosophy aligns perfectly with EL Education's We Are Crew framework, which emphasises teamwork, shared responsibility, and the contribution of every member to school culture.

Student Voice in Action:

Examples from Our School

The impact of our student agency approach is visible across school life. Our Student Representative Council has transformed from a Year 5-dominated body to one with a single representative from each upper primary class, ensuring that diverse perspectives are heard. This year, student-led initiatives have shaped Anti-Bullying Week messages and driven play equipment development.

Our 'Eco Warriors' identified problems with bin usage and devised their own sticker-based solution, which is a perfect example of students diagnosing issues and creating meaningful responses. The House Captains team has developed mentoring connections between Year 5 and Year 1 students, leading house system enhancements through a bottom-up approach, including house chants for Founders Day and upcoming House Day celebrations.

Co-Curricular Activities now reflect student voices more authentically, with students themselves selecting activities that are linked to their interests. This has brought about a reduction in requests to swap CCA assigned learning. Student-led CCAs include The Pao Press school newspaper; the YK Pao TV news channel; and the Theatre CCA. Within Years 3-5 Theatre, students now help select productions, contribute to direction, and design sets. Our teachers provide crucial guidance, enabling these ambitious CCA projects to become reality.

In the classroom, analytical rubrics have been developed across the Upper Primary years to give students clarity in their attainment and a voice in the progression of their learning. Students actively engage in identifying where they can improve, rather than relying only on teacher feedback and grading. The Maths team's statistical data project in Year 5 exemplified student-led learning, with students investigating areas of personal interest, from basketball free-throw percentages to economic tariff impacts.

Parents as Partners:

Extending Voice Beyond Students

Parent involvement enriches our student agency model. Beyond the amazing PTA, CE Parents and Story Parents, we've invited parents as assessors for the Year 5 EU unit exit point, the Great the Bold and the Brave. When onsite, parents acted as assessors to help give authentic feedback to students and share in their amazing learning journey.

Parents also joined for Year 3 and 4 Chinese Culture Week presentations, creating connections through real-life presentations and meaningful feedback. Parent connections have also brought expert speakers to school, enhancing community links and inspiring students with real-world perspectives.

The Impact: Ownership, Engagement, and Achievement

The outcomes from prioritising student voices are evident. Students report greater enjoyment of learning, stronger ownership of their progress, and deeper engagement with school life. When students take part in conversations about their learning, they develop confidence, responsibility, and skills that extend far beyond the classroom. As Quinn and Owen's research confirms, this agency drives not just engagement but genuine achievement, proving that at YK Pao School, every voice truly does matter.
